Beekeeping
Beekeeping is a part of the Year 5 and 6 Garden to Table programme at Te Aro School. It provides students with an opportunity to learn about the important role bees play in our environment while gaining hands-on experience caring for living creatures.
Working alongside our beekeeper, Claire, students don bee suits and head to the school hives to tend to the bees. They learn about bee behaviour, hive health, pollination, and the many ways bees support our ecosystems.
At the beginning of each year, students take part in harvesting honey from the hives. They then make use of the leftover beeswax caps, combining it with kawakawa to create their own kawakawa balm.
The programme encourages curiosity, responsibility, and kaitiakitanga, while helping students develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
